Gió Marconi ha il piacere di presentare la quarta mostra personale di André Butzer (n.1973, Stoccarda, Germania) con la galleria.
Tra i più rilevanti artisti tedeschi contemporanei, André Butzer esplora le possibilità del medium pittorico, sviluppando un universo personale e fortemente espressivo. Nei suoi lavori si colgono riferimenti alla storia tedesca e americana, alla cultura e alla politica, alla storia dell'arte fino alla fantascienza e al mondo dei fumetti.
Da Gió Marconi André Butzer presenta quattro dipinti N di diverse dimensioni.
L'artista ha intrapreso questa serie di dipinti a olio nel 2010 e l'ha sviluppata nel corso degli ultimi otto anni.
“N” sta per NASAHEIM (NASA Home), un neologismo coniato dall'artista che consiste nella combinazione di NASA ( acronimo dell'agenzia spaziale americana ) e Anaheim, la sede originaria di Disneyland.
“N” è una destinazione immaginaria e irraggiungibile creata dall'artista, un non luogo situato al culmine dell'astrazione, in cui, secondo Butzer, tutti i colori sono custoditi e dove il processo creativo trova la sua massima realizzazione.
I dipinti N costituiscono una sorta di zona zero della pittura, dove le relazioni tra i colori, la struttura compositiva e l'unità pittorica sono portati al loro punto estremo.
In ciascuna delle opere esposte, il massiccio campo pittorico nero è interrotto da una fenditura bianca dipinta a mano libera.
André Butzer considera se stesso un colorista, spiegando l'uso del bianco e nero come un'esplorazione del massimo potenziale del colore e una conseguenza dell'accettazione o inclusione di tutte le tinte.
Questi lavori danno vita a una propria cromaticità peculiare a seconda della loro diversa illuminazione: il nero non solo assorbe la luce ma diventa una sorgente di luce esso stesso, così come lo è la parte bianca, che aleggia sul dipinto come un interstizio, creando un lampo visivo.
L'artista ha dichiarato " (... ) è una luce scura. Essa abita il dipinto per cui il dipinto stesso diventa una sorgente di luce. Il quadro è il creatore della luce e rimanda all'origine della vita. Vita e luce sono concetti profondamente connessi. Sono un grande sostenitore del termine polisemantico matrice, poiché può essere vagamente assimilato alla parola madre. Io penso alla pittura come all'origine della vita (...) "

Insieme ai dipinti N, sono esposte due figure dai colori audaci, che ammiccano al mondo dei cartoni animati. In esse si colgono riferimenti ai personaggi creati da Walt Disney e alla fantascienza, ma anche all'Espressionismo. Butzer stesso ha descritto queste opere come "Espressionismo Fantascientifico".
Una gigantesca figura femminile sta camminando felicemente all'interno di uno scenario dorato, osservando il piccolo dipinto nero accanto a lei. La pittrice tedesca Paula Modersohn-Becker è ricordata in un ritratto psichedelico dipinto su uno sfondo rosso accesso.
André Butzer ha anche creato un'opera site specific per lo spazio della galleria.
L'artista ha scritto un poema sulla parete di ingresso.

Gió Marconi is pleased to present André Butzer (b.1973 in Stuttgart, Germany) in his fourth solo exhibition with the gallery.
At Gió Marconi both colourful figurative paintings and abstract black paintings from the N-series will be on display.
The series of abstract oil paintings was initiated in 2010 and has been developed over the last eight years.
“N” stands for NASAHEIM (NASA Home), a neologism conceived by the artist and consisting of a combination of NASA (the acronym for the American space agency) and Anaheim, the original home of Disneyland. “N” is an imaginary, unreachable destination, invented by the artist, a non-place situated on the edge of abstraction where, according to Butzer, all the colours are conserved and where creation will find its true realisation.
The N-paintings constitute a sort of zero zone in painting, where relationships between colours, compositional structure and pictorial unity are taken to their extreme.
In every single piece on display, the massive black pictorial field is interrupted by a freehandedly painted white gap.
André Butzer considers himself a colourist, explaining the use of black and white as being an exploration of the maximum potential of colour and the consequence of the acceptance or inclusion of all tints.
These works create their own chromaticity in accordance with different lighting: black does not only absorb light but also becomes a source of light itself, as does the white part, hovering above the painting like an interstice, creating a visual flash.
The artists stated "(... ) it's a dark light. It inhabits the painting so that the painting itself becomes a source of light. It's the creator of light and a hint at the origin of life. Life and light are deeply connected terms. I'm a big fan of this over determined term matrix, because matrix loosely translated is mother.I think of painting as the origin of life (...) "

The cartoonish audaciously coloured female figures are a reference to both Expressionism but also to Walt Disney characters and science fiction. The artist has described these kinds of works as “Science-Fiction Expressionism".
On a large-scale painting a blonde girl in a bright red dress seems to be walking happily out of the golden background. In “Untitled (Paula Modersohn-Becker)” André Butzer pays homage to the German painter whose small portrait with golden hair and blue eyes emerges out of a vivid red background.
A site-specific poem by the artist on the entrance wall of the gallery summarizes and completes the exhibition.

André Butzer is one of the most relevant contemporary German artists. His work explores the possibilities of the pictorial medium and develops a personal and strongly expressive universe. Butzer’s paintings reference German and American history, culture and politics, art history, science fiction, comics and animation.
